Residents of a blue-collar Los Angeles suburb where city leaders were among the highest paid in the nation are paying some of the highest property tax bills in the county.
With the addition of special municipal assessments, residents of Bell pay bigger bills than Malibu, Beverly Hills and other affluent communities in Los Angeles County.
The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday the owner of a $400,000 Bell home pays a property tax bill of about $6,200 a year. Tax records show the owner of a $400,000 home in Malibu pays about $4,400 a year.
Three top Bell administrators made a total of more than $1.6 million a year before resigning last week. Four City Council members slashed their salaries of about $100,000 by 90 percent.
